Sympathy and solidarity message from Canada on the death of “Ka Wilson”

Montreal, July 3, 2009 — We are very saddened to hear of the death of a strong fighter for the Philippine and international working class, Comrade Wilson “Ka Wilson” Baldonaza, on July 1, 2009.

It is especially sad for those of us from Canada lucky to have spent time with Ka Wilson at this year’s International Solidarity Affair held in Tagaytay as well as marching with him through the streets of Manila during the inspiring torch-lit May First rally.

We remember him as someone who was quiet and unassuming, but strong in his determination and solid in his desire to struggle for the fundamental rights and liberation of workers and the people, wherever they may be.

From thousands of miles away we send our sympathies to his wife, Lily, and to his friends, family and comrades at this difficult time. We realize this is a huge loss particularly for the KMU and the working people of the Philippines.

But we draw strength from Ka Wilson’s memory and commit to raise our struggle against capitalism, imperialism and local reaction to a higher level and to help build a world in which all workers and peoples have the right to live their life to the fullest.

Ka Wilson is dead! Long live Ka Wilson!

Long live international solidarity!

manggagawa.

A MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE

We Filipinos and non-Filipino friends from Montreal, Quebec, Canada send
our heartfelt condolences to all those who have known and lived with Ka
Wilson.

You are indeed lucky to have related and worked and lived with Ka Wilson.
We are edified by the life and example of this man. To the youth he has
shown the example of active involvement in a militant youth organization.
As a man of responsibility, he worked as a security guard at the Manila
domestic airport and a quality control in charge at the Mabuhay Textile
Mills and then led the workers union as its President in that factory
towards successful struggles against workers’ rights violations. Later on
he led the Bayan organization in Valenzuela, Bulacan. He continued to show
his concern for the workers and the community by becoming an educator and
evaluator at the Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research and
immersed himself in organizing workers unions and finally became the
Secretary General of the KMU. He had a very impressive personal
development of his dedication and concern for the workers.

We admire Ka Wilson for his dedication to the cause of the workers. He led
the way and showed how to love the workers and struggle for their rights.
This is his legacy to us. Whether we are in the Philippines or anywhere in
the almost 200 countries around the world where our kababayans have
forcibly gone to work, we can learn from the example of Ka Wilson.  We can
also commit ourselves to the cause and concerns of the workers in our
place of work and look back at the conditions of the workers in our home
front.  We all undergo similar exploitation and we have to struggle.

Ka Wilson has demonstrated to all of us how to live the principles taught
by the Kilusang Mayo Uno.  Ka Wilson has shown the example of a principled
member of KMU by being an active member and by living out the objectives
of the KMU. The KMU is indeed fulfilling its goal of promoting the rights
and welfare of the workers as exemplified by Ka Wilson.

May Ka Wilson rest in peace.  May his memory and legacy remain in our hearts.

Message of Condolence from the Negotiating Panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines

ImageA committed educator, a painstaking organizer, a genuine and militant trade unionist, a valiant fighter to the end – Ka Wilson Baldonaza exemplified a life of service to the working class and the Filipino people.

We of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines Negotiating Panel, including its consultants and general counsel, mourn with the family, friends and comrades of Ka Wilson. With his life and legacy, Ka Wilson has joined the outstanding ranks of Ka Bert, Ka Bel, Ka Lando and others who have militantly served the cause for national freedom, democracy and socialism.

Ka Wilson made his mark as a leader of the Filipino working class from his time as a member of the Samahan ng Demokratikong Kabataan (SDK) at the University of the East before the declaration of Martial Law, as a community youth organizer in his hometown in Tarlac and as a leader in the trade union movement in subsequent decades. Quiet and unassuming, he exuded dignity with his unwavering commitment to the national democratic movement and international working class movement.

In the trade union movement, Ka Wilson was a formidable figure. Be it as president of the union of workers at the Mabuhay Textile Mills in Valenzuela, as a union organizer and later on president of the Alliance of Nationalist and Genuine Labor Organizations (ANGLO), and as secretary-general of the trade union center Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement), Ka Wilson showed the characteristics of a leader and fighter for the interests of the Filipino working class.

He was an educator among his colleagues and comrades. His dedication to raising the consciousness of the Filipino workers was exhibited in his seven years of work within the progressive church-backed organization, Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research (EILER). He conscientiously propagated the line and analysis of Genuine Trade Unionism among the Filipino workers that helped in the further advancement of the workers’ movement.

As KMU secretary-general from 2007 up to the time of his death, Ka Wilson bannered the cause of the Filipino workers and people and pursued the unity and solidarity of the working class worldwide. He actively joined KMU-initiated International Solidarity Affair and vigorously promoted the people’s concerns in conferences and other activities he attended in the Philippines and in other countries.

Indeed, Ka Wilson lived a full life of service to the Filipino people and working class and the international working class movement. Ka Wilson will be remembered by his colleagues, friends and comrades.

The NDFP Negotiating Panel pays our highest tribute, honor and salute to Ka Wilson – son of the toiling masses, unionist, educator, organizer and a revolutionary martyr.

Long live the memories and work of Ka Wilson!
Long live the Filipino working class!
Long live the international working class movement!

Tribute to the comrade Wilson Baldonaza

The comrade Wilson Baldonaza, General Secretary of the May First Movement
Labor Center (KMU)  that has hundred of thousands of Filipino workers, died
on 1st July.

ka wilson rallyWe met him when he came in Italy, two years ago, bringing news about
Filipino workers’ struggle for their rights and against the repression by
the regime of Gloria M. Arroyo, responsible for the killing of many
unionists and workers. We met him again one year ago, in Hong Kong, at the
Third International Assembly of the International League of  Peoples’
Struggles (ILPS).

In these last years of his life, already suffering from the illness, he
always employed all his energy for working class’ rights and for the
liberation from imperialism and colonialism, and he was a model of leader
and comrade able to devote himself to the struggle to the end. His example
goes with that of comrade Ka Beltran, and of other comrades who give
strength and greatness to the Filipino revolutionary movement.

We honour the comrade Wilson, who lives in our struggle.

Letter of condolence of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) to the
death of the Filipino working class leader “Ka Wilson” Baldonaza

Dear relatives, dear friends, dear comrades,

with deep grief and sympathy we have received the news that the general
secretary of “Kilusang Mayo Uno” (KMU) and the president of the “Alliance of
Nationalist and Genuine Organization” (ANGLO-KMU) has died on 30 June,
2009 at the age of 55.

On behalf of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD), its youth league
REBELL and the children’s organization Rotfüchse (Red Foxes) we convey our
sincere condolences to his family, his friends and comrades, the Filipino
people and the working class movement in the Philippines.

We had the opportunity to get to know him on the occasion of his travel to
Europe in 2007 and we have pleasant memories of him as a modest,
courageous and optimistic trade unionist, comrade and friend.
Since 2007 he was general secretary of the militant trade union umbrella
association of the KMU.

As internationalist he supported among other things the propagation of the
International Automobile Workers’ Counsel and promoted the connections of
automobile workers in the South Asian region.

With Wilson Baldonaza (Ka Wilson) not only the Filipino workers’ and people’s
movement, but also the international proletariat has lost a significant
representative.

We are sure that it is in his sense to transform the grief over this great loss into
force in order to continue his revolutionary concern.
With deep sympathy and in sincere solidarity. #

Magaling kang guro, Ka Wilson

Mahusay kang naging propesor, Ka Wilson
nang ituro sa amin
ang optimismong dapat naming laging dalhin
hamon mo ito sa napanghihinaan ng loob,
pansampal sa mga nagdedeklarang huwag maging mapangahas;

at kolektibong paglaban

Kasamang Wilson Baldonaza:
Dakilang Lider at Edukador ng Uring Manggagawa

Revolutionary Council of Trade Unions–
National Democratic Front of the Philippines
04 Hulyo 2009

Mabuhay ang Revolutionary Council of Trade Unions!
Mabuhay ang New People’s Army!
Mabuhay ang Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas!

Mabuhay ang uring manggagawa!
Mabuhay ang sambayanang Pilipino!

“I am a witness to the sufferings of my struggling people,
and I will bear witness to their liberation….”

I am honoured to have had the oppurtunity to have met Ka Wilson during the 25th ISA. His contributions and his speech were inspirational and will be remember by us for a very long time.

Ka Wilson’s death is not only a loss for the Filipino people and working class but also a loss to the oppressed peoples of the world and for the struggle. It is sad to be confronted with such a loss however his example will shine the path for all of us to advance the struggel even further.

Condolences to Ka Wilson’s family, hic comrades and all his confreres in the KMU.

- Dilber – The Netherlands, (ATIK)

Ka Wilson is an inspiration for those of us who struggle in the trenches of the class war in other lands. He will be missed. His love of the working class and his internationalism are an example to all.

- Robert McCauley, 23rd ISA, National Union of Healthcare Workers, Oakland, CA

- Judy M. Taguiwalo, UP Faculty Regent
